Grace Cottage Hospital Radiology Department: Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a safe radiation free imaging procedure that utilizes echoes of sound waves to visualize soft tissue and fluids in the body. A computer receives the sound waves through a transducer, which converts them into pictures. The sound wave transmission and reflection cycle is blocked by air and bone. There is air on your skin and that is why a warm water based gel is placed on the skin.

What to expect for your Ultrasound:
Many ultrasound exams require preparation, such as no eating or having a full bladder.
You will be asked to remove any articles of clothing from the body part to be scanned.
Gel will be applied and you may be asked to change positions or hold your breath depending on the type of exam your physician has ordered.
The Sonographer will capture the images and send them to the Radiologist to be interpreted and then a report will be sent to your physician.

Abdominal
Abdominal ultrasound images can be made of the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, bile ducts, kidneys, spleen and aorta.

Obstetrical
Obstetrical ultrasounds give images of the pregnant uterus, placenta and amniotic fluid.

Pelvic
Pelvis ultrasound tests provide images of the uterus and ovaries.

Doppler Exams
Doppler ultrasound exams produce color images of arteries and veins in the neck, arms or legs.
