AUXILIARY HAPPENINGS

FAIR DAY, 2003: “Well attended and enjoyed by all” was the comment of a longtime fairgoer and worker. Then she added, “and a heck of a lot of work.” It is a lot of work, done by generous people who appreciate their hospital and want to give something back. These capable volunteers created — for a day— a wonderful experience for area residents and visitors. Fair Day is truly a community event. The Townshend Congregational Church made space available for the art show, and the elementary and high school opened their facilities for Fair Day use.

The 2003 Fair will go down in history as one of the most successful, grossing over $64,000. It was certainly one of the luckiest Fairs — the ground was soggy after a week of rain and downpours on Friday night, but it cleared for Saturday and stayed dry until the Common was cleared on Sunday...then it started pouring again! Perhaps the most amazing aspect of the weather on Fair Day, though, was that there were reports of intermittent showers and wet roadways in various towns around Townshend, but not a drop fell on the Common, even despite ominous clouds over Ball Mountain at several times during the day.

MEMBERSHIP UPDATE: As of the beginning of September, membership donations totaled $9,985. Donations are still being received daily, so there will be another update in the next Cottage Door. Your gift to the Grace Cottage Auxiliary, no matter what the amount, is very much appreciated by the Auxiliary and our special little hospital. At the Fair Day evaluation meeting on August 26, “ice cream specialist” Mike Stankiewicz drew the winning name for the annual luxury weekend trip. Carleen and Bucky Pelsue were this year’s winners—and they have gracefully declined the trip as several other winners, such as Don and Annette Leigh, have done in the past. We deeply appreciate their great generosity. Thank you for your support over the years. The strength of our Auxiliary has been always been in caring, giving people like you.

Barbara Barber, Vice President
